Over 50% of women report experiencing period pain at some point in their lives, and while many think nothing of popping a couple of pills, others prefer to find their relief in more natural ways. Below are five natural ways that you can relieve period cramps; it is recommended that you speak to your doctor prior to trying any of these, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions.
1. Herbal Tea
Not much research has been done on herbal tea in relation to period cramps, however, many women have reported benefits and now purposely drink herbal tea during the latter part of their luteal phase and throughout their period. One of the best-reported teas for discomfort is cramp bark. To make this, you need to boil two teaspoons of the bark in a cup of water, let it simmer for around fifteen minutes, and drink a cup two to three times a day.
2. Essential Oils
According to a study published in the Journal of Obstetrics, massaging with certain essential oils can help to reduce period cramp discomfort. The best essential oils to use include marjoram, sage, and lavender. To use, dilute pure essential oils in an unscented cream or lotion before applying topically to the body. Using the essential oil directly may lead to skin irritation, so this is ill-advised.
3. CBD
CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory and a muscle relaxant making it a fantastic weapon against period cramps. In addition, it also has pain fighting properties, meaning it can help with the aches and pains that many women experience every month without the need for pharmaceuticals. Many women who use CBD also find that it helps to boost their mood while lowering levels of irritability and anxiousness. CBD can be purchased in oil form and used in the same way as the essential oils above, or it can be purchased as a cream or a gel from companies like CBD Giants.
